Dr. Amberleigh Carter is a healer.

If we had to sum up our impression of Amberleigh after spending an hour and a half on the phone with her for this interview, we would say she’s a beam of light who is gifted with the ability to help others see things with a different, more empowered perspective, and in her work she ultimately helps others to make a shift in their lives with that new viewpoint.

Amberleigh has spent a big part of her life devoted to learning about holistic health and how the human body can heal itself. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with a double minor in Neuroscience and Psychology, a Bachelor of Metaphysics degree, a Master of Metaphysics degree, and a Doctorate of Metaphysics degree from the University of Metaphysical Sciences. And she’s a certified Holistic Health Practitioner.

Amberleigh is the founder and owner of Kinection Holistic Health, where she teaches clients how to create health by eating foods and establishing lifestyle patterns that increase energy and repair and regenerate the body. She helps clients combat barriers in their lives, and helps them to implement the changes required for them to reach their health-related goals. So we only had a few questions for the New Orleans-based beauty in this interview (yeah, more like a few hundred). Read on for our interview with Amberleigh…

WHAT IS METAPHYSICS, IN YOUR OWN WORDS?

Western philosophy is three dimensional, it’s based off Newton’s laws. If something is broken, you find it and you take it out. Metaphysics is based off Einstein’s theories and the power of thoughts, emotions and consciousness. It’s looking at a whole other dimension.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW, HAVING STUDIED HOLISTIC HEALTH AND NOW METAPHYSICS, AND COACHING OTHERS IN THOSE AREAS?

I got here from my own personal experiences with being ingrained in western philosophy. My path was originally to be a medical doctor, I was pre-med in college. I was also exercising twice a day, barely eating, and I was gaining weight. I asked my professors of nutrition and biology for help, and they said, “You must be closet eating because you can’t gain weight if you’re burning more calories than taking in”. I knew the body isn’t a machine, there must be something different. So I dropped my plans for western medical school at that point, and I started researching diet. I started eating real butter and ate all the “no-no” foods, because the other way wasn’t working. I began to cook for myself, looked at my sleeping patterns and cut out alcohol. It was almost magical how the weight started dropping off me, but I was putting in less effort and I had less stress around eating the wrong foods and getting all these workouts in. I had a sense of wellness or well-being and that changed everything.

This brought me to metaphysics, and the fact that there has to be something that addresses feelings and emotions when it comes to wellness, so I started looking for that. Metaphysics helped me put the science behind these gut feelings. I came across a website and read through a person’s bio which mentioned metaphysics, and it led me to research how I could study this more myself. And I found the program that felt right to me. It wasn’t about getting letters behind my name, I just wanted to study this because it made so much sense to me on a cellular level. I wanted to make this relatable to the everyday “basic” person.

AS YOU WERE LEARNING MORE ABOUT METAPHYSICS AND HOW TO APPLY IT TO YOUR OWN LIFE, HOW DID YOU START TEACHING OTHERS WHAT YOU WERE LEARNING AND EXPERIENCING?

As I got deeper into metaphysics, the intuitive side of things started to amplify. I was learning to follow my gut. Now I’ll get a gut feeling to eat a certain food or I’ll get a download of information about the food, and I’ll just know intuitively how the food is interacting with the cells in my body. I want to teach other people that they can do this themselves, and I want to teach them how to do this themselves. Learning how to go with your gut and to trust your gut when it comes to your own health, that’s everything. You really are your own best healer.

Anytime someone I’m working with experiences a healing, I tell them that they’re the one doing it. I’m building a level of frequency, and they can choose to match it or not. They choose whether or not they heal. I just remind them of where they need to be, and they choose to align with me or not. With anything in your life, you are in the driver’s seat. That includes with your health and well-being.

SO, WE HAVE THE POWER TO BE WELL AND FEEL GOOD, AND WE HAVE THE POWER TO GET OURSELVES OUT OF A PLACE OF DIS-EASE?

People often come to me and they feel powerless in past experiences, and I just help them learn they are in control of getting out. Just like a parked car. You can get yourself out of a parking space, because you got yourself in, right? It’s all about your own power and the power of consciousness; how do you interpret your environment? You dictate that, always. It’s an empowering mindset.

HOW DOES THIS KIND OF SELF-HEALING, SELF-EMPOWERING MINDSET PLAY INTO MAKING HEALTHIER CHOICES EACH DAY?

You learn how to tune into yourself in the present moment, how to tune into your body and what it wants right now. Listen to what your gut is telling you, what is your body asking for? You are the only person who can really answer that question. Is your body asking for cardio right now, or yoga, or maybe even rest? Is it asking for certain foods or certain supplements? You are the only one who knows the answers.

A lot of what we think we know about living healthy comes from belief systems, maybe things we are taught by our friends or family, or things we learn from the media or from reading. So we create these belief systems, that we must eat this way or we must avoid that. In metaphysics, it’s about being able to transcend who you believe you are and how you think you should eat. Instead of living from that place of letting others determine what’s right for you and your body, get present and check in, and that transcends your belief systems. Question it: why did, say, the paleo diet not work for me? Why is my medication not helping me? It’s about tuning in and figuring out what your body needs, what your heart needs. Constantly tuning into your self really puts you in control of yourself and your body, because you’re allowing flow to happen.

WHAT CAN YOUR CLIENTS EXPECT TO LEAVE WITH WHEN THEY’VE HAD A SESSION WITH YOU? HOW ARE THEY ABLE TO APPLY WHAT THEY’VE LEARNED IN WORKING WITH YOU TO THEIR LIVES?

I use different healing modalities when working with a person one-on-one, including Reiki healing, matrix energetics  and reconnective healing. I teach people how to be their own healer by learning their own likes and dislikes, food and lifestyle choices.

What I’m most passionate about is teaching people how to connect back to themselves and teach them to tune in, and also to drop judgment, drop their stories about themselves. So your doctor diagnosed you with this and now you think you’re weak and broken…what if you had no hurt and no trauma in your past? What if you dropped all those stories and you stepped out of the victim role? What if you considered that you actually chose everything that has happened to you, whether it’s good or bad? Helping people to change their mindset in this way pulls them into a state of presence, a state of being. That transcends the emotional triggers that are causing the pain and resistance, the stuck energy in their body that’s holding them back. Maybe they’re in this place of holding onto all of this and they’ve told themselves a story that’s now driving them. I try to help them drop their boundaries and limits, and see themselves as what they truly are, which is a being filled with light particles, which are filled with information. Between those light particles is room for shifts to occur. It’s this space between particles where the shifts occur. This really affects people.

I try to help people to step out of time, like Einstein told us to do. And we can do that by getting out of our minds and getting into our hearts. We do this through playing more, meditation, being in the present moment, being more child-like and getting out of the logical mind. Think about it, that’s what we do when we’re on vacation, we get out of our minds. When we’re on vacation, there’s no concept of time. When we’re in creative mode, when we’re present in the moment and we’re in our hearts, that’s when healing can occur. We have to get back to things that connect us to who we are. A great place to start is remembering what we loved to do as a child. And then we go do those things. That’s when we heal and find true joy. I teach people how to get heart centered and drop the stories and beliefs they’ve created about themselves. If you have beliefs set up, you’ll receive an experience as your truth according to your perceptions around those belief systems. Think how different that could be with no belief systems to influence our perceptions! How much can you drop belief systems and allow healing energy and love to flow through you?

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS HOLDING MANY OF US BACK FROM LIVING IN THE PRESENT MOMENT, AND BEING ABLE TO TUNE INTO OURSELVES?

Judgment. The judgment makes you feel separate, it disconnects you from source, and disconnecting from your source keeps light from coming in and that can cause disease patterns. On social media especially, we judge others and compare ourselves. We bring that energy into social media. What’s the energy behind what your choice is? Is it obligation, is it pure joy, pure love? Pay attention to the energy behind anything you do. Are you questioning your worthiness, are you telling yourself things like, “I’m only worthy of love when I do ______”? That’s an incredibly toxic way of thinking. Judgment pulls us away from healing energy. Why are you pissed off that she didn’t like your picture? That’s when we put conditions on other people, and we find ourselves disconnected from ourselves.

Also, take a look at your relationships, because the people closest to us are reflections. So when you feel a certain way in a relationship, pay attention to whether you’re giving that to yourself. Bring it back to yourself and view it as a sign that it’s time to tune in to yourself. Go within, ask why do I feel this way? Why do I feel angry with him, why do I feel she’s not supporting me, why do I feel like no one is able to please me? Often we can turn those instances in our relationships inward, and take a look at our relationships with ourselves and how these can be outward mirrors for us.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MEDITATION AND WHY IT’S SO HARD FOR MANY PEOPLE TO SIT FOR MEDITATION?

We’re taught to judge what’s there, any thoughts that come up for us when we sit quietly and still. When you meditate, just sit and allow it to flow through you and not judge it, even if it’s negative. It doesn’t always feel good to meditate, especially in beginning stages, because you’re pulling out all that’s in there. You’re clearing all the shit out and the hardest part is not judging it.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALLY TUNE IN TO YOURSELF AND KEEP YOUR ENERGY CLEAR ON A DAILY BASIS?

I keep my energy clear every day by moving my body physically. I exercise in a way that feels good for me in that moment, whether that’s biking, walking, pilates, free weights or swimming. On days when I feel very clear, I might just rest or take an epsom salt bath so there’s no stagnation happening in my energy. Energy is meant to move through us and there are other ways to do that besides just exercise. When I have an ache or a pain, I like to move in a way that relieves that. I just choose my movement each day intuitively, but I try to move at least five days a week if not seven. Some weeks though, I might only move two days that week. I always just tune in and make choices from there and trust in what my body tells me.

If I’m out and about interacting in the world, and I have an uncomfortable feeling, I’ll tune in by just stopping and bringing awareness to that feeling or emotion. I’ll finish what I’m doing and when I get back to myself, I’ll do something to connect to myself. That could be meditation, journaling, cooking, walking or anything else that takes the mind out of the equation. I’ll bring up what I felt earlier in that moment, and I’ll ask myself why am I feeling this way, how is this serving me? And then I’ll listen for the feeling. I won’t judge myself if it’s say a feeling of unworthiness or something like that, I’ll just breathe through it and allow. I also will focus my energy on where there’s tension or tightness, and I’ll breathe into that area of the body. If I find that there’s a pain in my left hip, for instance, I’ll just breathe and feel it out. It might be three weeks later down the road that it’ll dawn on me why I felt that way in that particular instance, that uncomfortable feeling. But when that happens, I always try to acknowledge it and allow it, and I’ve found that I eventually understand what the message is from my body.

For me, it’s also really important that I’m expressing myself fully out into the world and letting go of how people will receive it, whether they’ll like it or not. We aren’t responsible for the way other people hurt, and it doesn’t mean we have to change. It comes down to your intentions for what you’re putting out there and what you’re doing, are your intentions pure? That’s the important thing. It’s okay to have differences with people, and we don’t have to be responsible for other people’s healing. We have to allow life to happen, tune in to the present moment and disconnect from what others around us think, of course with the purest of intentions.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DO IN THE MORNINGS TO HELP YOU START YOUR DAY TUNED IN?

When I wake up, I try to think about my dreams. Sometimes I journal, sometimes I don’t, but just remembering my dreams helps me to start my day tuning into myself. I don’t necessarily try to remember the logistics of the dream, like what happened in it. Instead I’ll just focus on feeling into the energy of how I felt in the dream. Was I scared, excited or something else? The subconscious mind releases through our dream states. I’ll give gratitude for the dream and the insights from my guides that I’ve connected to in the dream world.

IF YOU COULD SHARE ONLY ONE TIP WITH OTHERS AROUND HOW TO LIVE A HOLISTICALLY HEALTHY, HAPPY LIFE, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

Love yourself unconditionally, first. This will improve any interaction you’ll have with any person, period. Anything in your reality is a reflection of what’s going on internally. Your relationships and every day interactions will be different. People deny themselves of their own power. We are infinite, we are lovable just because we exist. I try to see every single person as their highest self, and I try to reflect that back to them so they are reminded of their own power. Ultimately, I try to help them get back to their inner connection and their connection with what’s greater than us.
